Canadian Music Appreciation 101

February 12, 2008 · 2 Comments

All right, it’s 2am and I need to go to sleep. But I just found a way to easily post songs of one of my favorite bands onto this blog, so here goes.

11 years ago , I had not heard any Canadian music. In fact there’s a good chance I did not know there was such a thing as Canadian music. Fortunately my good buddy Sarah began making me awesome mixtapes (that’s right, kids: TAPES) of quirky bands, most of whom I’d never heard of. Geggy Tah, Sloan, Moxy Fruvous, Odds.

But there was one group I kept coming back to: the Rheostatics. At the time I couldn’t quite say that I liked them. In fact, the first time I listened to their songs, I remember feeling a weird feeling between confused, upset, and maybe a little queasy. To me they sounded like a bunch of kids high on sugar singing off-key inside the locker room of a public indoor pool. It took me years to figure out that it was actually supposed to sound that way.

And so began my lifelong obsession with the great (and, as of March 2007, late) Canadian band the Rheostatics. There’s a lot more to say, but for now, listen to this song. It’s the first Rheos song that I ever heard, and I’ve been hooked ever since! It’s called “Me and Stupid” from the album Introducing Happiness.
