Beware the Ides of Improv

Hi Friends,

Here's an update on what I'm doing in March.

My improv group, Yum Yum Bangkok, has been gathering steam lately, drawing crowds and putting on some very fun shows. If you haven't seen us, come on out!

Dates:

Wednesday, March 5th @ 8:30 pm
Wednesday, March 26th @ 8:30 pm

At the Magnet Theater, 254 West 29th St (near 8th ave).

Admission: $5.

And, less importantly but still extremely important, I am also performing in another show called "Guess Who's in My Class?", in which seasoned improvisers perform with fledgling audience participants. They haven't told me which one I am yet, but either way it should be a good time!

Thursday, March 6th, @ 11:30 pm
Thursday, March 20th, @ 11:30 pm
Thursday, March 26th, @ 11:30 pm

Admission: FREE.

Canadian Music Appreciation 101

All right, it's 2am and I need to go to sleep. But I just found a way to easily post songs of one of my favorite bands onto this blog, so here goes.

11 years ago , I had not heard any Canadian music. In fact there's a good chance I did not know there was such a thing as Canadian music. Fortunately my good buddy Sarah began making me awesome mixtapes (that's right, kids: TAPES) of quirky bands, most of whom I'd never heard of. Geggy Tah, Sloan, Moxy Fruvous, Odds.

But there was one group I kept coming back to: the Rheostatics. At the time I couldn't quite say that I liked them. In fact, the first time I listened to their songs, I remember feeling a weird feeling between confused, upset, and maybe a little queasy. To me they sounded like a bunch of kids high on sugar singing off-key inside the locker room of a public indoor pool. It took me years to figure out that it was actually supposed to sound that way.

And so began my lifelong obsession with the great (and, as of March 2007, late) Canadian band the Rheostatics. There's a lot more to say, but for now, listen to this song. It's the first Rheos song that I ever heard, and I've been hooked ever since! It's called "Me and Stupid" from the album Introducing Happiness.
